Finding Your Tribe: Build Meaningful Relationships in Gaming

The gaming industry is built on passion, creativity, and collaboration. It’s not just about what you know or how good your portfolio looks; it’s about the relationships you form along the way.

Connecting with the right people—your tribe—can inspire you, help you grow, and open doors to exciting opportunities.

LinkedIn – Your Gateway to the Industry

LinkedIn isn’t just a platform to post your resume or find a job; it’s a powerful tool for connecting with professionals in the gaming world. Think of it as a virtual coffee shop where game designers, artists, and developers hang out.

Here’s how you can make the most of it:

1. Personalize Your Outreach

When sending a connection request, don’t just click “Connect.” Take a moment to write a short, meaningful note. It shows you care and makes you stand out.

  • Example: “Hi [Name], I’ve been following your work on [Game/Project], and I’m truly inspired by what you’ve achieved. I’d love to connect and learn more about your journey!”

My LinkedIn Success Story

I joined BHVR thanks to LinkedIn. Shortly after arriving in Canada, the studio reached out about a recruiter role, but I couldn’t apply due to my closed work permit.

Once I got my permanent residency, I reconnected with my contact. To my surprise, they were still hiring! A few months later, I joined the team, and over two years later, I’m still proud to be here, representing the studio.

This experience shows the true power of LinkedIn—connecting people and creating opportunities at just the right time!

2. Be Active and Engaging

Engage with the content that catches your eye. Leave thoughtful comments on posts, share your perspective, or even ask questions. People notice when you take the time to add value to a conversation.

  • Pro Tip: Use hashtags like #GameDev, #ConceptArt, or #IndieGames to find relevant posts.

3. Join Gaming Groups

LinkedIn has groups dedicated to game development, such as Game Developers Network or Indie Game Creators. These are gold mines for advice, opportunities, and industry updates:

ArtStation: A Portfolio That Connects

ArtStation isn’t just a place to show off your work; it’s a hub for creatives who want to connect, share, and grow. It’s where your art can speak louder than words.

1. Share Your Process

Instead of only posting finished pieces, upload works-in-progress, breakdowns, or “making-of”shots. This gives others a glimpse into your creative mind and encourages conversation.

Check out the 2nd issue of Talent Play Zone for a step-by-step guide on building a strong and organized portfolio!

2. Comment Thoughtfully

Don’t just “like” someone’s art—leave a comment! Tell them what you love about their work or ask them a question about their process.

  • Example: “This piece feels so haunting—it reminds me of the eerie vibe in Resident Evil. How did you create that foggy background effect?

3. Build Relationships by Following Artists

Follow artists who inspire you, and engage with their work regularly. They’ll start noticing your presence, and over time, you might even form a mentorship or collaboration. This is some of them that I recommend you:

Discord - Join the Conversation

Discord is the beating heart of the gaming community. It’s where professionals and hobbyists come together to share ideas, get feedback, and even land job opportunities.

1. Find the Right Servers

There’s a Discord community for almost every niche in game development. Whether you’re a VFX artist, an indie game developer, or a woman in game, there’s a server for you. Here are a few I invite you to join:

  • Amir Satvat’s Games Community: A friendly place for gamers and game makers to connect, share, and learn together.

  • Women in Games: A welcoming space to connect, support, and empower women in gaming.

  • RealTimeVFX: A community for artists to share, learn, and talk about creating visual effects for games and real-time projects.

2. Introduce Yourself

When you join a new server, don’t lurk silently—Introduce yourself! Share a little about your background and what you’re working on. People are more likely to engage if they know who you are.

3. Participate in Events

Many servers host events like game jams, portfolio reviews, or AMA (Ask Me Anything) sessions with industry pros. These are fantastic ways to meet others and showcase your skills.

Join M. Paul Weeks, one of the creators of Tough Love Arena for a tour of how fighting games work, what design challenges exist, and how games past and present have tried to advance the genre. Discord

Why Your Tribe Matters

Your tribe is more than a network; it’s a source of inspiration, encouragement, and collaboration. It’s the group of people who will celebrate your successes, help you navigate challenges, and grow alongside you. The gaming industry can feel big and intimidating, but when you’re part of a community, it feels like home.

Take the First Step Today

  • Write a comment on a LinkedIn post.

  • Send a connection request to someone whose work inspires you.

  • Share a piece of work-in-progress on ArtStation.

  • Join a Discord server and say hi.

What’s new in the gaming industry?

The survival horror game S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2 by GSC Game World launched on November 20, 2024, and quickly hit an impressive milestone: 1 million copies sold within 48 hours! This achievement highlights the franchise's enduring popularity and the excitement surrounding its return after years of anticipation.

Fans have been eager for this sequel, which combines intense gameplay with a chilling atmosphere. The milestone reflects strong support from both long-time followers and new players diving into the world of Stalker for the first time.

Rumors suggest Sony is developing a handheld version of the PS5 to rival Nintendo’s Switch and Microsoft’s upcoming portable Xbox. The project, reportedly aimed at expanding Sony’s reach in portable gaming, is still years away.

Sony’s PlayStation Portal, a device for streaming PS5 games, was originally intended to be standalone, but technical challenges shifted its focus. With Nintendo’s Switch selling over 141 million units, the competition in handheld gaming is heating up.
