Breaking into the Gaming Industry: Key Trends Shaping Game Development

If you're dreaming of breaking into the gaming industry, exciting trends are reshaping how games are made, opening up great opportunities for fresh talent like you. Here’s how these trends are shaping game development:

Mobile vs. PC/Console Games

The market is split between mobile and PC/console games. In 2023, mobile games made up about $92 billion in gaming revenue. PC and console games contributed about $90 billion combined. Both markets are growing fast, offering many opportunities.

A Growing Industry

The Gaming Industry is huge and getting bigger! Worth over $200 billion in 2023, it’s expected to reach $220  billion by 2025. Whether you’re into mobile games or AAA titles, the market is full of opportunities to showcase your skills.

New Technologies, New PossibilitiesVirtual reality (VR) and augmented reality (AR) are taking games to the next level. Games like Half-Life: Alyx show how VR can fully immerse players in new worlds. Learning VR and AR can give you an edge in creating these groundbreaking experiences.

AI is Making Games Smarter

AI is changing how games react to players. Big companies like Ubisoft have teams, like La Forge, that are working on developing smarter AI for games. Imagine creating a game where the characters are so lifelike, they can learn from the player’s actions or even change the game’s challenges based on how someone plays. If you dive into AI, you could be part of creating the future of gaming.

Players Want Bigger Stories and WorldsGames like The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt have set the standard for open-world and story-driven games. Players love deep, interactive worlds, and if you’re passionate about storytelling, there’s never been a better time to get involved in creating rich game worlds.

Unreal Engine is on the Rise

Unreal Engine (UE) is becoming the top choice for many game studios, with even big names switching from their in-house tools. Learning Unreal gives you a huge advantage, as it's being used for both AAA and Indie projects. While Unity is still popular, especially for indie games, Unreal is catching up fast.

How to Build a Strong and Organized Portfolio

Having a portfolio and keeping it updated is super important because it shows people what you can do and how good you are at your work. It’s like your personal showcase to potential employers or clients.

A well-made portfolio makes you stand out, and if it’s up-to-date, it shows that you’re always learning and improving. Here’s how to make your portfolio great:

Show your style and interestsYour portfolio should clearly show what kind of art or projects you’re passionate about. For example, if you love creating realistic artwork, showcase projects that focus on realism, like lifelike character designs or detailed environments. This helps potential employers or clients understand your strengths and what you enjoy working on.

Keep it organized, not clutteredA neat, well-organized portfolio is key. Too much content can feel overwhelming and confusing. Instead of adding every single project you've worked on, focus on quality over quantity. For instance, pick 5–10 of your best pieces to display. This way, viewers can focus on your strongest work without getting lost in too many options.

Master at least one styleIt’s great to have versatility, but make sure you’ve really mastered at least one style. For example, if you work with both cartoonish and realistic styles, ensure you’re excellent at one of them. This way, employers can see that you’ve got deep expertise in one area while being flexible in others.

Explain every project clearly

When showing your work, take a little time to explain what the project is about, what tools you used, and your thought process behind it. For example, if you designed a game character, mention which software/technology you used (like Blender or Unreal Engine 5) and explain the idea behind the character design. Keep it simple but informative!

Choose the right platform for your rolePick the platform that best suits the type of work you do. If you’re an artist, ArtStation is a great choice. For developers, GitHub might be better. And if you want more control, create your own website using tools like Wix or Squarespace. For example, an artist might use ArtStation to show 3D models, while a programmer could use GitHub to show code projects.

Be ready to discuss the processBe prepared to talk about how you created each piece in your portfolio. For instance, if you designed a game environment, explain the steps you took from the initial concept to the final render. This helps show your problem-solving skills and how you approach projects step-by-step. It’s a great way to give insight into your creative process!

PS: A Custom Website Can Make You Stand Out!

A personalized website lets you control how your work is shown and reflect your style. It shows you’re creative and serious. You can organize your projects, add personal touches, and use your own domain (like yourname.com), which is easy to share and makes you stand out.

Alternatives:

  1. Show Your Style: A custom website lets you present your work in a way that fits your personality.

  2. More Control: You can design it how you like, with your own layout and colors.

  3. Look Professional: Having your own domain looks polished and helps you stand out from others.

Don’t Forget to Promote Your Portfolio!

Once your portfolio is ready, share it on platforms like LinkedIn and groups like Indie Game Developer. Join online communities like RealTimeVFX on Discord to connect with others. Attend industry events and conferences to promote your work in person. Be prepared to present and explain your projects—it could lead to exciting opportunities!

Essentially, a great portfolio is visually appealing, simple to navigate, and showcases your top work. It should reflect your interests and passions, making it easy for people to see what you love and excel at.

What’s new in the gaming industry?

In November, Xbox will begin testing a feature that lets players stream games they own, even if they’re not part of Game Pass, including popular titles like Baldur's Gate III and Elden Ring. This is important because it gives gamers more flexibility, allowing them to access their own titles on any device, similar to services like Nvidia’s GeForce Now. It expands the value of Xbox Game Pass Ultimate, making it even more appealing for players who want to stream their existing game libraries.

Bandai Namco saw strong 2024 results, led by Elden Ring’s Shadow of the Erdtree expansion. European CEO Arnaud Muller highlights the growing difficulty of launching new IPs due to rising development costs and crowded release schedules—reflecting broader industry trends. The company balances safe bets like Dragon Ball Sparking Zero with new IPs like Unknown 9 Awakening. Despite these challenges, Muller is optimistic about 2025, expecting growth as the industry evolves.
