Make Your Application Count: Resume, Portfolio, and the Art of Getting Hired
Your skills are ready. Now let’s make sure studios know it.
Welcome to the 18th issue of Talent Play Zone!
Hey there, it’s Matteo!
Last issue, we tackled visibility, how to show up and get noticed before you even apply.
But visibility is just the start.
The real magic happens when you hit send - your application is your handshake, your pitch, and your spark, all in one.
This issue is about making your application count: how to tailor your resume and portfolio so they stand out, avoid common mistakes that hold back great candidates, and write applications that actually get read and get replies.
Here’s what we’ll cover together:
✅ How to tailor your resume and portfolio to a studio’s real needs🚫 Common mistakes that make great candidates invisible📬 Tips to write applications that get read, and get replies
Ready? Let’s get started!
🎯 Tailor Your Resume and Portfolio: Show You Understand the Studio

Your application isn’t just a list of skills…it’s your story, told in a way that speaks directly to the studio’s needs.
📝 Make sure your resume and portfolio speak the studio’s language.
Here’s how to make that happen:
🔎 Research the studio’s games and values. Look at their recent releases, game genre, art style, and even their mission statement. Find patterns and language that resonate.
Customize your resume summary. Instead of a generic “I’m a passionate developer,” try: “Gameplay Programmer with 3+ years’ experience in Unreal Engine, passionate about immersive combat systems, ready to contribute to fast-paced action games.”
🖼️ Portfolio with purpose. If you’re an artist, curate projects that match the studio’s style. A stylized studio loves seeing stylized art. If you’re a programmer, highlight relevant tools and systems.
Highlight impact, not just tasks. Instead of “Worked on level design,” say: “Designed and implemented 5 levels focusing on player flow and combat pacing, contributing to a 15% increase in player engagement.”
Match language and tools. If the studio uses Unreal, highlight Unreal projects. If they focus on multiplayer, show multiplayer experience.
👉 Studios hire for fit, not just skills. Show them you understand their world.
🚫 Avoid These Common Mistakes
You’ve got the skills, but these mistakes can keep you off the radar:
❌ Generic resumes. If your resume could be sent to any studio, it’s too broad.
Tailor it.
No links. Recruiters want to see your work, so include links to your portfolio, GitHub, or ArtStation.
Walls of text. Use bullet points and clear headings.
Missing context. Don’t just list tools, explain how you used them to solve problems.
❌ Unclear role descriptions. Be honest about your role and contribution.
👉 Clarity beats fancy words every time.
📬 Write Applications That Get Read
Your email or cover letter is often the first impression, so make it count.
💌 Start with connection. Mention something specific about the studio, a game you love or a project that inspired you.
Get to the point. State who you are, what you do, and why you’re excited about the role. One paragraph is plenty.
Include links. Portfolio, LinkedIn, or GitHub…make it easy to see your work.
Proofread. Typos send the wrong signal.
👉 Think of your application as an invitation to chat , so keep it human and direct.
🌟 Your Next Move Starts Now

No matter if you’re just starting out or have years of experience, your application is the first impression you make on a studio.
Studios aren’t just looking for skills, they’re looking for people who understand their world, who care about their projects, and who are ready to make an impact.
Tailor your story. Clarify your impact. Show you get what they’re building.
Here’s your call to action:
Pick one thing from this issue and act on it. Update your resume summary. Polish a portfolio piece. Write a cover letter that feels real.
Make it a habit. The perfect application doesn’t happen in a single draft, it’s built over time.
You’re not just another resume. You’re a future team member.
Keep going. You’ve got this.
