Talent Play Zone - Issue 17 🎮
Get Noticed Before You Even Apply: Build Visibility, Build Opportunity
Tools, strategies, and quiet tactics that help you show up, and get seen, by studios before the job even goes live.
Welcome to the 17th issue of Talent Play Zone!
Hey there, it’s Matteo!
Let’s be honest, most people wait for the perfect job post, send in an application, and hope for the best.
But what if you could flip the script?
What if studios already knew who you were before the job ever went live?
This issue is about visibility: the small things you can do right now to get noticed before you even apply; no selling out, no fake “personal branding,” just real visibility that makes your next opportunity easier to grab.
Here’s what we’ll cover together:
How recruiters actually find candidates (yes, even before the job is posted)
The difference between presence and performance - and how to stay real
Smart visibility tactics to make your work easier to discover
Let’s dive in 👇
🔍 How Recruiters Really Find You

Most hiring doesn’t start with a job post – it starts behind the scenes. Recruiters and hiring managers are often searching well before a role is made public, especially for specialized or fast-moving roles.
Here’s how we look – and why it matters:
Keyword searches: We use keywords on LinkedIn, ArtStation, GitHub, and internal databases. That’s why your profile should include the tools, roles, and game genres you want to work on.
Boolean search: We build search strings like “Level Designer” AND “Unreal Engine” AND “Montreal”, so if you don’t mention your city, your tools, or your role clearly, you might get skipped.
Public portfolios: Sites like ArtStation, Behance, or GitHub show what you can do, not just what you say you can. Even a small project helps.
Community presence: We watch game jams, online talks, conference panels, Discord channels, Reddit threads. If your name pops up positively, we notice.
Referrals and tags: When a developer in our network says “Hey, check out this person,” that can push you right to the top of our list.
🧠 If we can’t find you, we can’t hire you. So ask yourself: if you were trying to find someone like you - would you show up in search?
✨ Be Seen Without Being Fake
You don’t have to “build a brand.” You have to build trust and that comes from showing up, consistently, as yourself.
Here’s how to be visible and authentic:
Share your journey, not just results: Posting polished final shots is great, but what about your process? Share a screenshot with what you learned, even if it’s messy. It shows growth.
Engage with others meaningfully: Instead of cold messaging 50 recruiters, engage with 3–5 posts each week. Leave thoughtful comments on game development threads. Help answer questions. It builds presence without pressure.
Be relatable, not perfect: You don’t need to sound like a press release. Talk like a human. A post that says “Spent 3 days trying to fix this shader… finally cracked it!” is more powerful than another “I’m thrilled to announce…”
Post with intention: You don’t need to go viral. Posting once every 2–3 weeks is enough to remind people you’re active and learning.
🎯 People hire people, not brands.
🚀 Make Opportunities Come to You

Want to be top-of-mind when the next opening comes up?
Here’s how to build your visibility pipeline now:
Update your LinkedIn headline and summary: Say clearly what you do and what you’re looking for (e.g., “Gameplay Programmer | Unreal Engine | Open to Action RPGs”). We often scan just those lines when sourcing.
Keep your “Open to Work” toggled on (or off, but updated): You don’t need to announce it, but having your profile reflect your job search status helps us match you faster.
Engage on job posts and studio updates: Don’t just comment “Interested.” Ask a thoughtful question about the project, or share a related insight. It gets you noticed.
Connect slowly and intentionally: Don’t mass-connect. Reach out with a quick message: “Hey, love what your studio is working on. I’m a junior artist focusing on stylized 3D and looking to grow, happy to follow your work.”
Use relevant tags when you post work: If your project matches a studio’s style or tools, tag them. It helps algorithms and people find your work.
🔥 You don’t need to chase every job. Make it easier for the right ones to come to you.
🧠 You’re Already On Their Radar… If You Let Them See You
Visibility is not about going viral. It’s about being easy to find, understand, and remember.
You don’t need a huge following. You need a clear signal.
The right opportunity may already be out there, looking for someone like you.
Make sure you’re not invisible.
You’ve got the skills. Now let them see the spark.
🌟 Your Next Move Starts Now

Let’s bring it all together. Whether you’re just starting out or trying to break through to the next level, here’s the truth:
You don’t need to be perfect to be powerful.
Studios aren’t just looking for the best portfolio, they’re looking for people who care, who grow, who show up consistently. That means you.
🎯 You don’t need 10 years of experience. You need clarity, consistency, and the courage to be visible.
So here’s your call to action:
Pick one thing from this issue AND act on it. Update your bio. Comment on a post. Share a project. Reach out to someone. Just one step.
Make it a habit. Visibility isn’t about a single big move… it’s about momentum.
You’re not invisible. And you’re not behind. You’re building. You’re growing. You’re becoming someone studios can’t ignore.
Keep going. You’ve got this.
