Unlock the Hiring Process
How to Stand Out and Get Hired
Welcome to the 14th issue of Talent Play Zone!Hey there, it’s Matteo!
Let’s be real:Landing interviews is exciting. But turning interviews into offers? That’s the real quest.
Here’s something most people don’t realize: studios aren’t just checking your experience or skills. They’re quietly asking themselves, "Is this person the right fit for our team?"
And the best part? You don’t need years of experience to stand out.You just need to show you understand the game.
In this issue, I’m breaking down:
What hiring managers are really looking for (even if you’re early in your career)
How to make your resume or portfolio impossible to ignore
Silent mistakes that cost candidates the job
How to tailor your application to fit a studio’s needs
Easy ways to leave a lasting impression
By the time you finish reading, you’ll know how to approach your next application with clarity, purpose, and confidence…whether you’re just starting out or leveling up your career.
Let’s help you make smarter moves and get closer to that “you’re hired” email.
What’s one thing you wish you knew before your last application?Let’s talk about it on LinkedIn or Instagram!
First, Understand the Hiring Quest:
What They’re Really Looking For
Before you hit apply, you need to know what’s happening behind the scenes.
Here’s what hiring managers are quietly looking for:
Clarity: Can they instantly understand who you are, what you’re passionate about, and what you can contribute? No confusion. No guesswork.
Alignment: Does your energy, style, and way of thinking match their studio’s culture? Are you excited about the same kind of projects they build?
Potential: Even if you’re early in your journey, do you show signs that you’re growing fast, eager to learn, and ready to tackle real challenges?
They’re not just filling a role. They’re choosing a future teammate.
Bonus tip: If you don’t have much experience yet, focus on what you can offer - passion, curiosity, grit, and a real understanding of their world. These qualities matter more than you think.
Make Your Resume and Portfolio Stand Out (Even with Little Experience)
Your resume and portfolio aren’t just about showing what you’ve done. They’re about showing who you are; and who you’re becoming.
Here’s how to shine even if you’re just getting started:
Focus on your impact. Think about what you created, improved, or learned through projects; even small ones like personal prototypes, mods, fan art, or student work.
Tailor everything. Customize your resume, portfolio intro, and project choices for each studio you apply to. If they make stylized RPGs, highlight stylized work. If they love bold tech innovation, highlight your experiments.
Tell a story. Walk them through your projects like a journey: what was the goal, how did you approach it, what challenges popped up, what did you learn?
If you’re just starting:
Highlight school projects, jam games, indie collabs, self-taught achievements.
Use a section like “Personal Projects” or “Learning Journey” to show off passion projects if you lack professional experience.
Bonus tip: Always list relevant tools and engines (like Unreal, Unity, Photoshop, Blender, GitHub). Show them you’re already playing with the right gear.
Quiet Mistakes That Keep Good Candidates Invisible
Sometimes you’re this close to making it; but a few small mistakes quietly push you out of the spotlight.
Here are the big ones to watch out for:
Generic applications: If your application feels like it could go to any studio, it won’t connect with this studio.Solution: Mention their games, values, or community in your cover letter or portfolio intro.
No real connection to the studio: Saying “I love games” isn’t enough. Show that you admire something specific about their studio or their style.
Not showing growth: Everyone stumbles. Studios don’t expect you to be perfect, they expect you to be improving. Show how you’ve learned from challenges, improved your work, or picked up new skills recently.
Great candidates don’t just show what they’ve done. They show who they’re becoming.
Bonus tip: Even one personal note or tailored sentence can separate you from dozens of generic applications.
Align Your Application with the Studio’s World
Studios aren’t just looking for skills. They’re looking for people who fit into their universe.
Here’s how to align yourself fast:
Play their games. Even a few hours can help you understand their style, mechanics, tone, and community vibe.
Follow them online. Look at their blogs, Instagram, LinkedIn, and even Discord channels if they have them.
Notice the details. Are they humorous and casual? Hardcore and competitive? Experimental and artsy?
Once you’ve absorbed their world:
Reflect that style in your portfolio choices.
Mention projects or features you admire.
Show in your application that you’re already thinking like one of them.
The closer you feel to their world, the easier it is for them to picture you on the team.
Bonus tip: Even if you haven’t played all their games, mentioning one feature, art style, or design choice you love can make a big impact.
How to Leave a Lasting Impression (Even Before You’re Hired)
Getting noticed isn’t about shouting louder. It’s about showing you care, think, and connect.
Here’s how to stand out even before you get the job:
Reach out thoughtfully. A short message like “Hey, I love [Studio’s Game]. It’s inspiring me to improve my level design skills!” can plant a seed on LinkedIn.
Follow up smartly. After an interview, don’t just say “thanks… mention something specific you learned or enjoyed during the conversation.
Stay visible. Share small updates about your personal projects, skills you're learning, or game jams you're joining, even after applying.
One conversation now could turn into an opportunity six months later.Stay consistent, stay visible.
Bonus tip: Being respectful, genuine, and curious will leave a bigger mark than any formal “networking strategy” ever could.
Final Buffs Before You Apply: Quick Wins
Read your resume out loud. You’ll catch awkward wording fast.
Test every link. Make sure your portfolio works beautifully on mobile and desktop.
Mock interview yourself. Practice introducing who you are and why you’re excited about this studio.
Customize every application. Even a tiny personal touch can change everything.
You don’t need the longest resume. You need the most intentional one.Passion + Preparation = Power.
